Happy Birthday America, “For the Fourth”

2014-06-29 12.04.23

I love birthdays. Not necessarily mine, but other people’s, especially my kids. I’m already planning their next party and their birthdays are not until March. When I think of the fourth of July, and the blessings we have because of the “birth of America”, I can’t think of a better title than “Happy Birthday America”.

Introducing Our Featured Friend: Happy Birthday America
Written by Mary Pope Osborne, Illustrated by Peter Catalanotto

Mary Osborne Pope, (also author of the Magic Tree House series), writes this story of a three generational family together in a small town celebrating the birthday of America. She says, “This book was inspired by a recent 4th of July that my husband and I spent in a town in southeastern Pennsylvania. It was a day made up of many small things: lemon ices, pitch penny, family chat. But it was about big things: community, freedom, and pride in our country’s history. It truly was a ‘glorious and ever memorable’ celebration of America’s birthday.”

On the Fourth of July, Mom, Dad, Katie, Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Beth, baby Jess, our dog, Bud, and I go to Memorial Park.

Thus begins this family’s day of celebration including: marching around the ball field, waving red, white and blue steamers, eating popcorn and pizza, buying raffle tickets, seeing shows, painting faces, fighting with balloon swords, eating barbecued chicken, listening to bands playing “Yankee Doodle”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Of course the grand finale to their day is the fireworks:

“There they go! ”
“Oooooh!” “Ahhhh!” “Wow!”
“Like a palm tree!”
“Like tadpoles!”
“Like a weeping willow!”

“A moment of silence.
Then huge bursts of light,
one on top of the other,
and a million pieces of gold
rain down on the trees
near the flag that is still there.”

VBS, Venturesome Bible Stories, “NIV Adventure Bible”

2014-01-18 18.47.33

An Adventure Like None Other

Our kids are attending a local VBS, Vacation Bible School, this week and loving it. All over the United States, thousands of kids go to a local church’s Vacation Bible School or a church camp and enjoy stories with correlating songs, crafts, games and team building activities. Since I like to follow the holidays, seasons, and current activities when selecting weekly themes for kids’ books, this week I’m sharing books, videos, and CDs that you may want to pick up for your kiddos when they do VBS (or other church camps). Reading the Bible for themselves can be hard for kids, so selecting a friendly, but accurate version such as the NIV (New International Version)  helps them get into the adventure of a lifetime!

Introducing Our Featured Friend: NIV Adventure Bible
Features Written by Lawrence O.Richards, Zonderkidz

According to Wikipedia, “The Bible is widely considered to be the best selling book of all time, has estimated annual sales of 100 million copies, and has been a major influence on literature and history, especially in the West where it was the first mass-printed book. The Gutenberg Bible was the first Bible ever printed using movable type.”

As a former English teacher, I found the Bible referenced in most of the literature that I taught, from Shakespeare to Anne of Green Gables. Reading the Bible is an important part of every kids’ education.

This NIV version with the cool features like sections titled: Words to Treasure, Did You Know?, Life in Bible Times, and Live It!, help kids understand and personalize the book. If you are reading the Bible to your kiddos, have them follow along in their Bible. They may want to come up with a system of marks for parts that are special to them, or hard to understand, or extra-interesting.

Inviting You To Become FRIENDS With The Bible:
Feel, Relate, Imagine, Explore, Navigate, Develop, Share

These activities are taken from the special features throughout this book:

F- From Live It!, Numbers 14:1-24. When do you feel like it’s hard to forgive? When have you needed forgiveness?

R- From Life in Bible Times, p.240. How can your family relate to the people of Israel when God provided for them in a special way? Joshua told one man from each of the 12 tribes to pick up a stone when crossing the parted waters of the Jordan River. These stones served as a “memorial or special reminder” of God’s power and faithfulness to the Israelites. As a family, you could take some small stones and with your kids, write down ways God has provided for each of you.

I- From Live It! Revelation 21 & 22. Imagine what Heaven is like. “These verses tell us a lot about what heaven will look like. Name three jewels that will be found in heaven. What will the streets be made of? Will there be a sun or moon? Why or why not?” What are some things you value here on earth that you want to see in Heaven?

E- From Live It!, Psalm 30. Explore how people in your family overcame sadness. “Ask your mom or dad or grandparent about a time when one of them felt very sad. Why was he or she so sad? How long before the sadness went away? Ask too about times they felt very happy.” These talks can help children recognize their own emotions, cause of their feelings, and how to cope with them. “Sadness is like the night, when everything seems dark. But God says that joy will come in the morning.”

N- From Live It!, II Thessalonians 3:6-10. Navigate (make your way through) your neighborhood and community discovering ways you can work responsibly and earn money. “Here are some jobs kids your age can do. Do work for your mom or dad around the house, or help a neighbor. . . . Wash Cars. Wash windows. Can you think of other work you might do to earn money?”

D- From Life in Bible Times, p.827. Develop your own jewelry like those that men and women may have worn in Bible times.

S- From Live It! Psalm 135. Share something great God has done by taking turns going around the table as a family. “Count and see how many great things your family can remember about God.”

Reading & Singing this Summer

Our kids are attending a local VBS, Vacation Bible School, this week and loving it. All over the United States, thousands of kids go to a local church’s Vacation Bible School or a church camp and enjoy stories with correlating songs, crafts, games and team building activities. Since I like to follow the holidays, seasons, and current activities when selecting weekly themes for kids’ books, this week I’m sharing books, videos, and CDs that you may want to pick up for your kiddos when they do VBS (or other church camps). Victoria’s favorite part of VSB today was the songs, so let’s start with a book that she enjoys reading and listening to at bedtime.

Introducing Our Featured Friend: 100 Read & Sing Devotions
Created by Stephen Elkin, Illustrated by Tim O’Connor

Each devotional is two pages with the following format: Title of song, story fitting the song, “Word Watch” which is a Bible verse, and then on the second page, a picture and prayer illustrating the song and story. Often, kids have a hard time remembering what they read, so the 2 CDs featuring the Bible songs, make the stories both meaningful and memorable. Reading this together in the morning, lunch time, or before bed and then playing the song on the CD is a great routine to establish with your kids. Research shows that it takes about 14 days to establish a habit and since there are 100 of these devotions, you’re set!

Lullabies for Little Ones, Usborne & Scholastic Summer Selections

Rocking My Little One to These Tales & Tunes

Featured Friends: Usborne Books Selected

Recently I hosted an on-line Usborne book party and had such a cool experience shopping for books with my friends. I have one child that I can still rock while I read to him. These are the books I selected for our 2 1/2 year old and he loves them; I know because he hands them to me, then sits perfectly still in my lap when I read them to him. Treasuring these moments!

Introducing Our 3 Featured Friends:

Usborne Little Children’s Bedtime Music Book
This precious 8 page book with 6 soothing tunes to go with the story is a perfect way to rock a little one to sleep. I like that this musical button book is “classical” in style and includes the violin, guitar, horn, xylophone, clarinet, and flute. Kids can learn the name and sounds of the instruments while enjoying relaxing before rest.  Super Soothing.
Ages Infants to 4

*The Next 2 Books Compliment Each Other: An Usborne & A Scholastic Selection:

The Usborne Book of Lullabies (With CD)
This board book with 5 tabs features the lyrics and lovely illustrations for 7 lullabies including: Twinkle twinkle, little star, I see the moon, All the pretty horses, Bye baby bunting, Golden slumbers, and Sleep, baby, sleep. The instrumental CD includes these plus several other songs. We enjoy playing the CD while rocking and singing. I don’t know all the tunes, so the CD helps me stay in tune! Super Sweet!
Ages Infants to 4

If You Were My Bunny by Kate McMullan, Illustrated by David McPhail, Scholastic
Of all the lullaby stories we’ve checked out from our library, this is our favorite. Yes, we bought this one. Kate McMullan organizes it brilliantly: 5 featured mommy and baby animals (including bunnies, bears, cats, ducks and dogs) with 5 “If you were my . . .” stories, and 5  correlating lullaby tunes with her animal lullaby lyrics. For example, my favorite one is the bear cub with Mommy bear. First McMullan tells their story:

“If you were my bear cub and I were your mama bear, I’d scoop honey from a hive inside a hollow tree and let you lick it from my paw.
Then I’d sniff a storm in the air and race you through the first fat raindrops back to our cave, where I’d nuzzle you and whuffle you a song.”

Then she writes mommy bear and cub lyrics to the tune of “Sleep, Baby, Sleep”. We like to play the CD from the Usborne book and sing these lyrics:

This illustration of mama bear protecting her cub from the storm is such a comforting picture, especially on stormy night or after a difficult day.

She closes her book with mommy and son together:

This illustration captures the heart of a mother.

Super Snuggly. Ages Infants to 4
