Summer Reads & Activities for Our 8 Year Old Son, Usborne Books

Featured Friends: Usborne Books Selected

Recently I hosted an on-line Usborne book party and had such a cool experience shopping for books with my friends. Based on our 8 year old son’s interests, these are the books I selected for him to enjoy this summer.

Introducing Our Featured Friends:

100 Paper Airplanes
HUGE hit! This book contains 100 pieces of uniquely designed paper each with a perforated edge to neatly detach  from the book. There are four main folds to learn. I got this so Dad and son could do a fun activity together, and once they did the four folds, our son kept busy for hours doing the rest solo. Then, he and Dad flew the planes together indoors and outdoors (and from ladders!).
My son’s thank you: “Mom, this is the best gift ever.” Fun Flights, ages 6+

Geography Encyclopedia with Complete World Atlas
Our son likes looking at maps, globes, and studies of our solar system, so this is a great book for him. The Table of Contents is vast, covering the seven continents, climate, people and the world, planet earth, weather, and more. My favorite feature is the internet links as he needs productive practice on the computer this summer. Great Resource, Ages 8+

Spying
“You reap what you sow”. When I was a child, I loved to hide and spy on people and then top it off by scaring my “victims”. (Sorry for all the scares Mrs. Crutchfield. Thanks for still advancing me to first grade!) Now our son likes to do the same thing, with a “boy” twist to it: nerf guns, black hat, black jacket, dark glasses with a mirror in them to see behind him, and then top it off by watching an episode of the old “Get Smart” with Maxwell Smart. Spying covers cool topics like, “secret messages, spy detectives, global espionage, code breaking, CIA around the world, and truth and fiction.” Intriguing Read, ages 9+

Story of Inventions
One of our favorite shows right now is Shark Tank. We love seeing what inventions people design, produce, and sell. Our son is an entrepreneur trying to come up with his own invention, so this book is great for him. We rarely stop to ask ourselves where something originated. But, when we do explore how people changed our world, that knowledge gives us a greater appreciation for what we have and for those who made the discoveries. Story of Inventions shares inventions fitting under these main categories: “land transportation, air travel, food, household items, communication, clothing, medicine, writing, and miscellaneous. Fascinating Facts, ages 8+

Snake and Lizard
Since the two main characters in this chapter book are animals that interest boys, this story is immediately cool to them. Teaching kids about friendship can be challenging as they interact with other kids mainly at school, church, and outside our home. Snake and Lizard is an adventure story with a lesson in appreciating other’s differences “on the way to becoming firm friends.”

A Perfect Father’s Day, “Dad’s Day Out”

2014-06-10 07.59.14

” ‘. . . I’m taking you out for a perfect Father’s Day,’ Susie said. . . ‘You like the park, don’t you Dad?’ “

Our Featured Friend: A Perfect Father’s Day
Written by Eve Bunting, Illustrated by Susan Meddaugh

With Father’s Day coming on Sunday, you may be in the midst of planning what to do for dad. This cute book puts a twist on the selection of events for the day. Another fitting title for this book may be, “Daughter’s Day Out on Father’s Day”! The story captures the special relationship that can exist between Fathers and their children, and how a Dad’s attention, perspective and love make all the difference.

Introducing Susie and Dad and their “Perfect Father’s Day:

Father’s Day Morning: Susie, Daddy’s little girl, sneaks up on him while he’s resting in his chair after reading his morning paper. She has a day planned out for dad, beginning with lunch . . . at her favorite place.

” ‘This is your favorite food, isn’t it, Dad?’ she asked.
‘Sure is,’ Dad said. ‘May I pay?’
‘Certainly,’ Susie said.”

Next she takes him to the duck pond, where dad buys Susie food for the ducks.
Then off to the park, where dad pushes her on the swings, climbs the monkey bars, and pays for her to ride the merry-go-round. Susie suggests a red balloon for a gift, so dad buys two, one for Susie and one to take home to mom.

” ‘Are you having a good Father’s Day, so far?’ Susie asked.
Dad smiled. ‘Perfect’.”

They make it home for dinner with Mom, and enjoy her homemade Father’s Day cake with four candles on it, one for each year he has been Susie’s Dad.

Susie is quite proud to tell her mom all about their day out doing  all of Dad’s favorite things and going to Dad’s favorite places“! Dad closes the day with a hug.

My Daddy, “A Father’s Day Delight”

2014-06-10 08.01.06

Although the only stripes your dad may wear are the ones on his tie, “My Daddy” is a cute, fun book that’s just purrfect for Father’s Day!

Our Featured Friend: “My Daddy”
Written by Julia Hubery, Illustrated by Rebecca Elliott

As with most holidays, part of the fun is developing “family traditions”. For Father’s Day, the kids and I always enjoy going to the bookstore and library and finding good “Daddy’s Day Books” to read to him while he eats the breakfast we attempt to make together. While perusing the shelves at Barnes and Noble last week, this is one that we selected for this Father’s Day. Here’s why . . .

Introducing “My Daddy”:

Dads are so different all over the world,
with feathers or fins, or tails that are curled.
Some dads are big and some dads are small,
but whose dad is really the best of them all?

The bright pictures of animals, featuring “father and child” varieties , throughout this fun poetry book grab children’s interest. Kids enjoy seeing what animal dads do and what they are like. By the author creatively crafting characteristics of the animals, children can relate these descriptions to their own dads, or “father-figures” in their lives as well as appreciate the differences in dads.

For example, Kangaroo Dad bounces so high with  joey on his back that it’s like flying in the sky . . . Children can relate this to the piggy back rides or tosses in the air from Daddy or things of like nature.

Tiger Dad roars so loudly that it scares other animals, but when he’s with his little tiger, “he’s a softie-puss” . . . Children can sense other’s impressions of their dad outside of the home, but to them, he’s “just dad”.

Crocodile Dad’s teeth give others a scare, but his crocodile kid feels safe at his side.  . . Children can find safety in their dad’s protection of them from harm.

Supermouse Dad is big, brave and strong and he gets food for little mouse without the cat seeing . . . Children sense their dad’s provision.

Chameleon Dad is hard to spot, but his son can find him . . . Children can easily think of the games of hide-and-seek with their dad.

Owl Dad is of coarse wise, but it’s with his magical eyes that he catches his owlet sneaking up on him to begin their night of play .  . . Children can think of a time that Dad has stayed up with them “past bed time” having fun.

Octopus, Monkey, Elephant and Whale all have special times with their kids, and the closing page captures the essence of the poem,

So whose dad is best and what makes him top?
A long, curly nose, or a huge, bouncy hop?
However dads look, whatever they do,
YOUR dad is the best,
and he thinks you’re great too!

Once Upon A Memory, “Reminisce”

2014-06-05 19.39.37

“What will you remember?”

Our Featured Friend: Once Upon A Memory
Written by Nina Laden, Illustrated by Renata Liwska

What are some of your favorite things to remember? In the daily tasks and routine of life, I find myself looking at life as how it is now without really giving thought to the past. Through simple questions and precious illustrations, Laden and Liwska help us slow down for a moment to remember.

Introducing Our Featured Friend: Once Upon A Memory

In considering the origins of things, we pull back the present to view the beginnings of what we have and see right now. In remembering the past, we can appreciate the present.

To children, this 7 couplet poetry, picture book can help them enjoy their world more fully. To adults, it can help us remember the best parts of life.

C.S. Lewis said, “A children’s story which is only enjoyed by children is a bad children’s story”. This book is a good story.

Laden’s 7 couplets are spread out over 32 pages, slowly unfolding memories. How else can we really appreciate the complexity and simplicity of life all at once unless it’s presented slowly and purposefully? Laden and Liwiska do just that:

Does a feather remember it once was . . . a bird?
Does a book remember it once was  . . . a word?

Does work remember it once was . . . play?
Does night remember it once was . . . day?

. . . And the ending makes this book one of my favorite:

Does the world remember it once was  . . . wild?
Will you remember you once were . . . a child?

Inviting You To Become FRIENDS With Once Upon A Memory:

Feel, Relate, Imagine, Explore, Navigate, Develop, Share
From the 7 suggestions, select the questions and activities that best fit your audience:

F-  Which picture and part of the poem makes you feel reflective? To which page do you find yourself turning back? Why?

R-  How do you relate to this poem by remembering and appreciating the beginnings of something special in your life? *For example, if you have a garden or a plant, do you remember when it was a seed? If you raise animals, do you remember when it was just the mommy and daddy? If your an older sibling, do you remember what it was like before another child was born? If your family built a home, do you remember when it was just the foundation? Try to draw or describe something special to you from where it really began.

I-  Imagine that you get to relive one of your favorite days. Close your eyes and remember what you did that day by capturing the sights, smells, sounds, tastes and textures that make up that memory.

E-  Explore your surroundings in a unique way by slowing down, looking at a few parts of nature and finding their origins (beginnings).

N- Navigate (map out) your reflections from the activity above by drawing some sketches or writing your own poem based on what you observed.

D-  Develop a list of your favorite memories.

S-  Share your list of “Favorite Things To Remember” by doing a “round robin” with your audience (go around the group several times sharing one memory each round). If possible, do some of the favorite things on your list with the kids in your life and do some of the favorite things on their list. Make more memories! Together you can write a sequel.

Laden’s List

The art was initially sketched by hand in the artist’s journal. It was then scanned and colored in Adobe Photoshop. The animal characters were inspired by the artist’s experiences with nature, from her worldwide travels to her own backyard.”

“The seashore is always changing. This Take-Along Guide and its activities will help you know some amazing seashore creatures.”

Our Featured Friend: Seashells, Crabs, and Sea Stars
Written by Christiane Kump Tibbitts, Illustrated by Linda Garrow

My favorite place to retreat is to the ocean. No two days there are ever the same. I have a special “ocean journal” that only contains my memories at the sea. Our four years living in South Carolina during my husband’s residency training provided us many day trips to Charleston and Isle of the Palms. Now that we are in Texas, it’s hard to get back to the Atlantic Ocean. We recently discovered Gulf Shores, Alabama, a one day drive, and are thrilled to take our children there to discover the wonders of the ocean.
