The Senior Voice Article: Stories To Say The 3 Magic Words, “I Love You”:

YOU ARE MY WISH

Guest writing for The Senior Voice is an honor as I have much to learn from those reading that newspaper! Hope you enjoy the sweet children’s books featured in my latest article in The Grand Times section:

Sometimes the best way to say, “I love you” to your grandkids is to show them . . . through reading a special book together. The images and stories stick with them in a way that chocolates and candy cannot. (Although I think the best combo is reading with them while they eat treats! Then you have a quiet, captivated grandkid! J) This Valentine’s Day, make a special memory with your grandchildren by reading them a love story. – See more at:

The Night Before Valentine’s Day, “Cards, Candy Hearts & Cupid”

They read Cupid’s note as he leapt down the hall: “Happy Valentine’s Day to one and to all.”

Anticipating a holiday is half the fun, which is why Natasha Wing’s “The Night Before” Series is so great. Her Valentine’s Day poem-picture book is no exception. We “love” it!

Introducing Our Featured Friend: The Night Before Valentine’s Day
by Natasha Wing, Illustrated by Heidi Petach

‘Twas the night before Valentine’s Day,
and all through the town,
children were busy,
not making a sound.

They gathered their scissors,
their glitter and glue,
pink and red paper,
and paintbrushes, too.

They made cards that read,
“Will you be mine?”
and others that said,
“My true valentine.”

The kids went to sleep dreaming of candy hearts, eager for the next school day! They arrived to a decorated classroom; they played games and enjoyed face painting. They gave their Valentine’s Day cards to each other, ate yummy treats and drank punch with heart-shaped ice cubes.

Just when the party was almost done, a surprise guest arrived: the principal himself dressed in full Cupid gear! He left a special gift . . . a box with the cutest class hamster! The gift made “the days after Valentine’s Day” special too!

The Night Before the 100th Day of School, “100 Days Older, Smarter, & Cool”

“‘Twas the night before the 100th day when I started to worry. What’ll I bring into school? I need something in a hurry.”

Most students are approaching their 100th Day of School. Our kids are excited for Thursday, February 5th to celebrate their 100th Day by dressing up like they are 100 years old! See how other students celebrate in Natasha’s Wing’s creative poem.

Introducing Our Featured Friend: The Night Before the 100th Day of School

‘Twas the night before the 100th day
when I started to worry.
What’ll I bring into school?
I need something in a hurry.

Most kids had their 100 items ready for the party at school: 100 pencils, 100 cars, 100 jelly beans, 100 gold stars. But, every time the main character, a young boy, counted his items, he came up short . . .until he thought of something that no one else would bring: ants!

He waited patiently the next day in class while everyone had a turn during Share Time. Then he headed to the front of the room excitedly. Maybe a bit too eager, because he stepped on a marble and he and the ants went rolling! 100 ants spilled onto the classroom floor. He quickly put his lunch crumbs on the floor to direct the ants  back to their farm instead of toward the celebration cake:

“Now that Share Time is over
and the last ant is in . . .
It’s time for our party.
Let the celebration begin.

Are you ready for cake?”
We all shouted, “Yes!”
Then we blew out the candles.
How many? Just guess.

The Feelings Series, “From Lonely to Loved”

Recently I ordered these books from my child’s school book order and we are finding them helpful in identifying what we are feeling and why. With eight books in The Feeling Series, I am highlighting two: Happy & Sad. Opposites.

Introducing Our Featured Friend: The Feelings Series
by Trace Moroney

The story begins, “When I’m feeling sad I feel like someone has taken all the colors away . . . and everything is grey and gloomy and droopy.” Continuing in first person, Moroney shares what may make us feel sad: arguing, sickness, and death of loved one, and what may make us feel better: talking with someone, doing enjoyable activities, and being with friends and family. The book closes with, “But the nicest feeling of all is when a kind person gives me a hug and says, ‘Everything is going to be okay.’ “

The story begins, “When I’m feeling happy I feel B~B~BOUNCY and full of joy.” Continuing in first person, Moroney shares what may make us feel happy: being with friends, baking with Grandma, and camping with Dad, and how we can make others happy: be more patient, slow to anger, be kind. The book closes with, “Feeling happy is such a fantastic feeling. It makes me feel good about the way I look and the person I am.”

Select a few activities from the kid-friendly book guide while reading this story:

F- What do you feel today and why?

R- What part of that feeling book do you relate to most? For example, if you are feeling happy today, what part of the Happy book do you relate to most . . . laughing? Being with friends?

I- Imagine you could completely get rid of one of the eight feelings covered in this series. Which emotion would you never want to feel and why? Talk about the pro’s and con’s of that emotion.

N- Navigate through all eight feelings books and talk about each emotion in helpful dialogue, welcoming and inviting honesty when one-on-one with your child or client.

D- Develop a “what to do when I’m feeling______” list or picture to help your kids, class or client remember positive ways to deal with each emotion as it comes. AKA: Action/Reaction Chart, Cause/Effect Graph, Cycles or Systems.

S- Share your top three emotions during the day and what happened that prompted those feelings. Great conversation starters with kids to understand the details of their day!
