One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth
“The animals looked frightened and the mice all started to squeak at once.”

Following up on Percy & His Friends: We left our friends scared about what the noise may be under the floorboards of Percy’s hut in the park. Was it a monster? Let’s see:
“‘Look out! It’s coming up through the floor!’
‘Help!’ cried the animals and they all ran to hide.” . . .
‘This isn’t a monster,’ said Percy. ‘It’s a mole!'”
But when the matter was settled and they were no longer fearful, the animals still wanted to stay in their snugly hiding places as they were much more comfy than when they all had tried to fit into Percy’s little bed.

Interacting with the Book:
Two of my favorite features of this version of One Snowy Night are the CD reading of the story & the full size poster attached to the back.
A fun activity is to have the children find all the places the animals hid from what they thought may be a monster but was actually only a mole. There are also other things hidden in the picture for the child to find (listed at the bottom of the poster). Just don’t miss the previous page in the book where the mice “squeezed themselves into Percy’s slippers!”

After reading the story to the children, it’s fun to play the CD and let them hear it in a different voice. Enjoy!

Family Favorite During Final Days of Winter

Featured Friend: One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth is a family favorite, especially during these final days of winter. This story will carry you from the cold, lovely winter forest to a cozy cabin that fills up with cute creatures. Grab some hot chocolate, an oversized blanket to fit the family, and read this story together.

Introducing Percy & His Friends: “It’s cold in the park in winter. But Percy the park keeper doesn’t mind . . .Percy likes to be out in the fresh air. In the middle of the park there is a little hut. This is where Percy lives. When it gets too cold to be outside, Percy goes into his hut where it’s cosy and warm.” – Nick Butterworth

Percy’s friends, the forest animals, know him well as he often shares his lunch with them. One night when it gets so cold that it snows, the animals wonder if he will share his hut with them too. Knock after knock, Percy welcomes the little creatures into his bed, until his bed just won’t hold another animal. See how this problem is solved after a mysterious noise from the floorboards frighten Percy’s furry friends.  . .

Interacting with the Story: My kids enjoy getting stuffed animals that look like characters from their favorite books. Because this story has some of the cutest illustrations, they enjoy gathering their stuffed animals to read along too. Most likely, your children will already have some stuffed animals that will go along with this story. Tell them to grab all the animals they have that may be in a forest, and as you read the story, see if any of their selections appear in the book!
